It was so bad that after I watched it the day it came out on DVD I wrote an eloquent Rant comparing the anime and movie and tried to send it to Paramount but could not find the "Contact us" link, because they do not have one. Here is my letter;
My objective is not to offend anyone or condemn your company but express how completely disappointed I was in The Last Airbender. I am aware that Anime has not been around very long and may not be taken seriously as an art, but anyone can recognize a good story. To take a amazing story and devalue it to the point of a "B" movie while trying to preserve the story line truly has skill, and not one to be proud of. There are so many examples that the Director chose to cut corners. Specifically, the pronunciation of the names, Aang (not pronounced Ong) Iroh (not Ear-row) Sokka (not Soaka) I could go on. Did this guy even see the entire anime? For the LOVE OF GOD at least get the names right. Or did he in his infinite artistic wisdom think "Hmm I think their names sound better this way, it sounds better, it gives it some flare." Omg, every time I heard a mispronounced name I wanted to throw my TV to the ground and stomp on it. When Katara pleaded "OONG, I've always believed you were the Avatar! as the movie was nearing the climax, I wanted to find a sledge hammer! I would say that "artistic addition" definitely took away from the movie experience.
The acting was absolutely horrible, not to mention the logic of the script. I mean really? Why didn't Katara tell Aang that in the beginning? What was the point of even saying that when Aang had no reason to doubt her belief that he was the Avatar or his own identity. The Katara from the anime says in the intro of every single episode that she believes that Aang is the Avatar, so why is Katara coming across as one of those overly passionate about nothing, almost about to cry, praying into the microphone protestant chicks *pukes into her popcorn bowl* Point in case, the Katara in the anime makes sense, this one doesn't. In the anime, the fire nation for bids earth bending in a small village, as a result a young man has to practice his nations prized skill of earth bending deep in the protection of the forest, when Aang, Sokka, and Katara happen along him he stomps on the ground, extracts a giant boulder, and smashes it into the side of the ravine wall. Upon being discovered practicing his skill, he runs away but is later betrayed and sent to the same prison camp as his father. This young mans father is imprisoned on a fire nation boat surrounded by water, where their pride has been completely from the earth benders over a period of years. When the trio come across him, the young earth bender has not seen his father in years and doesn't even know if he's alive. In the movie version, a pre-pubecent boy seems to have escaped from a low security prison camp and is antagonizing fire nation guards by throwing small stones at them with his earth bending skill. The fire nation guards then take the trio to a prison camp where there is copious amounts earth at the earth benders disposal. The little boy runs to his father who is not surprised to see him at all and sits on his lap. Then Aang gives an inspiring talk to the earth benders which given the changed circumstances, doesn't make any sense. This alteration makes the story seem childish and cheesy and does not do the original any justice.
So many other key elements of the story are left out like the Kyoshi warriors and the aged earth king Bumi, Aang's child hood friend, who are very important elements later in the fire chapter. Is it possible that Paramount does not recognize movie making as an art form? Is it possible that Paramount does not recognize that Anime is a respected art form not just restricted to persons 12 and younger but to anybody of any age. And by releasing this less than acceptable adaption of a loved amine, that Paramount Pictures has deeply disappointed not just children but many people of all ages. This is some serious blunder. The entertainment industry has been unwittingly teaching the American youth the art of good story telling through mediums such as Cartoon Network and Nickelodeon. If you don't know, Cartoon Network has been showing anime for years on Adult Swim; Dragonball-Z, Inuyasha, Samurai Champloo, Cowboy Bebop, Fruits Baskets, etc. Adult Swim is targeted towards college students and mature adults. This demographic has developed a appreciation for anime and The Avatar: The Last Airbender is very popular, not just among children, but among adults as well.
As a result, Paramount Pictures, a leader in the entertainment industry is undoing themselves by allowing poor directors to massacre valued works of art. Paramount is lazy, Paramount does not do their research, Paramount does not know their audience, Paramount does not care about their viewers input or ideas. All it would take is a company who does these things and values the art of making a good story all the time, every time. A company like this would put Paramount out of business so quickly.
